Middle Rock, Deepwater National Park, QLD
A Tiny Beach Camp Most Queenslanders Have Never Heard Of
Most people driving the coast between Bundaberg and Gladstone end up in Agnes Water or Seventeen Seventy. Fair enough, they are great spots. But just south of Agnes Water in Deepwater National Park sits Middle Rock campground, a tiny beachside camp that barely fits three setups and is almost always empty.
What Makes It Special
Middle Rock is not a destination that features in the top ten camping listicles. There is no Instagram crowd, no booking frenzy and no need to set an alarm to grab a spot. You drive in, you set up, and you have a stretch of coast that feels like it belongs to you.
The campsite sits right on the beach. No tree buffer, no fence between you and the water. You fall asleep to waves and wake up to a sunrise over the Coral Sea. For a coastal camp this accessible, that is genuinely rare.
Getting There
Head south from Agnes Water on Seventeen Seventy Road, then take the turn onto the dirt track into Deepwater National Park. A standard 4WD handles the track fine in dry conditions. Sandy patches near the beach are best taken with a bit of pace, so airing down to around 25 PSI is a smart move before you get in.
Booking is required through the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Given the size of the site, book early if you are planning a long weekend visit.
What to Do
Fishing off the beach is the main event, with tailor and dart common along this stretch of coast. Swimming is good on calmer days, though check conditions as it is an open ocean beach. The national park has walking tracks worth exploring, and the Deepwater area is known for loggerhead turtles nesting from November through January.
At night, the lack of nearby towns means genuinely dark skies. Bring a reclining camp chair and stay up for the stars.
What to Pack
- Fishing gear, tailor rigs work well
- Traction boards for soft sand sections
- All water you need, no water on site
- Firewood if permitted, check current fire conditions
